Diomande Race, Klopp’s Shadow, and a £100m Raid: Liverpool’s Crisis Summer Takes Shape

Barcelona is threatening to hijack Liverpool’s pursuit of RB Leipzig teenager Yan Diomande. Jürgen Klopp is publicly ‘waiting in the wings’ as Arne Slot faces his toughest fortnight in charge. And a £100m double raid on Brighton and Newcastle is reportedly being planned for the summer. Three crises. One defining window.

Liverpool at a Crossroads: The Summer That Will Decide Everything

A Club Under Pressure From Every Direction

Liverpool’s 2025-26 season has unravelled badly. A 4-0 hammering at Manchester City, nine defeats in a single Premier League campaign for the first time since 2015-16, and a Champions League quarter-final against holders Paris Saint-Germain on the horizon. Arne Slot’s title defence has collapsed, and with Mohamed Salah confirmed as leaving at the end of the season, the summer window is not just important — it is critical.

Three stories are dominating the agenda at Anfield this week, and they are all connected. How Liverpool resolves each one will shape the club’s direction for the next five years.

“Liverpool does not need a perfect window. They need a decisive one — and fast.”

LDP ANALYSIS  —  London Daily Post Sports Desk

Slot won the Premier League in his first season without major signings. That goodwill is now draining rapidly.

FSG are publicly backing Slot, but their patience has a limit — and this summer is the test of it.

Three crises at once are not bad luck. It is a structural problem that recruitment must fix.

Story One: Barcelona Move For Liverpool’s Salah Replacement Target

Yan Diomande — The Teenager Liverpool Wants Most

Yan Diomande, the 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger, has emerged as one of the most talked-about young wingers in world football this season. The Ivory Coast international has registered 11 goals and eight assists across all competitions — numbers that have attracted serious attention from both Liverpool and Barcelona.

Liverpool’s interest has intensified since Mohamed Salah confirmed his departure. The Reds need a right-sided winger capable of stepping into one of the most demanding roles in English football, and Diomande’s profile fits closely: direct, explosive, and effective in tight spaces.

Barcelona Enter the Race — and Complicate Everything

Spanish outlet Sport has reported that Barcelona are also eyeing Diomande as their own ‘dream winger signing.’ The Catalan club made enquiries with Leipzig but were reportedly told the competition is fierce, with Liverpool and Chelsea both willing to exceed the €60 million threshold.

Barcelona’s interest is serious, but their financial position remains constrained. Sources close to the negotiation suggest the Spanish club did not receive much encouragement from Leipzig about their chances of completing a deal ahead of more financially powerful rivals.

Liverpool’s Advantage — and Their Risk

Liverpool appears to be leading the race. Their willingness to pay above €60 million gives them a structural edge over Barcelona, who continue to operate under La Liga’s financial control mechanisms. However, the player’s preference matters — and the lure of the Nou Camp, however financially weakened, is never entirely without appeal for a 19-year-old.

LDP ANALYSIS  —  London Daily Post Sports Desk

Diomande is exactly the profile Liverpool needs: young, proven at the European level, and available.

Leipzig poorly received Barcelona’s enquiry — this looks like Liverpool’s deal to lose.

Speed matters here. Liverpool must move before Barcelona restructure their bid or another club enters.

Klopp’s Return to Anfield Turns Up the Heat on Slot

What Happened Last Weekend — and Why It Matters

Jürgen Klopp returned to Anfield last weekend for a Liverpool Legends charity match against Borussia Dortmund, serving as assistant manager to Sir Kenny Dalglish. The match ended 2-2, but the real story was Klopp himself — his beaming smile, his touchline energy, and the roar of the crowd that greeted him.

For Arne Slot, sitting at home preparing for a Champions League quarter-final while his predecessor received that reception, the timing could not have been more uncomfortable. Klopp himself admitted he ‘didn’t want to show his face’ given the current situation at the club.

Is Klopp Actually ‘Waiting’ for Liverpool?

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness told the media this week that Klopp could be ‘waiting across the water to come back and reclaim his throne’ — while describing that idea as ‘a little bit fanciful.’ According to Sky Sport Switzerland, Klopp is ‘feeling the urge to coach again’ after his role as Red Bull’s head of global soccer.

However, it is important to be precise. Klopp is contracted to Red Bull until at least summer 2029. FSG has not approached him. Senior club figures have publicly distanced themselves from sacking Slot, and The Athletic’s James Pearce reports that ‘Liverpool are not thought to be preparing any decision on Slot’s future at this moment.’

The Real Pressure on Slot — Results, Not Rumours

Sam Allardyce put it plainly: ‘You can’t get rid of him when he just won the league.’ Slot’s title win in his debut season earns him protection — but only if the remainder of this season is salvaged. Liverpool face PSG in the Champions League and must secure a top-five Premier League finish to guarantee European football next season. If both fail, the Klopp conversation moves from fanciful to serious.

LDP ANALYSIS  —  London Daily Post Sports Desk

Klopp’s visit was innocent in intent but devastating in optics — Anfield erupted for him, not Slot.

FSG is backing Slot, and that position is genuine. But ‘full support’ has always come with small print at Liverpool.

Xabi Alonso remains the reported favourite to replace Slot if it comes to that — not Klopp.

Liverpool Plan £100m Double Raid on Baleba and Gordon

The Two Premier League Targets — Named

According to journalist Ekrem Konur, Liverpool are ‘considering’ two Premier League stars for their summer rebuild: Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba and Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon. The combined valuation of both players sits at around £100 million, though the true cost of extracting them from their clubs could be significantly higher.

Carlos Baleba — The Midfield Engine Liverpool Are Missing

Baleba, 22, was on the verge of joining Manchester United last summer in a deal worth approximately £60 million before that move collapsed. The Cameroon international has just two years remaining on his Brighton contract and is valued at around £48 million by Transfermarkt, though Brighton will demand a premium. He is described by those close to Liverpool’s recruitment as the kind of ball-winning, physically dominant midfielder that Slot’s system currently lacks.

Anthony Gordon — The Return of an Old Target

Liverpool came ‘incredibly close’ to signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle in 2024. The former Everton forward — a boyhood Liverpool fan — has since continued his development under Eddie Howe, scoring 17 goals and adding five assists across all competitions this season. His Champions League numbers are particularly striking: ten goals and two assists in 12 appearances. Newcastle values him well above his £52 million Transfermarkt listing.

Can Liverpool Afford Both?

Last summer Liverpool spent over £400 million, setting records for both single-player fees and total window expenditure. Another major outlay this summer requires significant player departures to balance the books under Premier League financial rules. Andy Robertson, Ibrahima Konate, and Mohamed Salah are all confirmed or likely to leave — generating both funds and squad gaps that must be addressed simultaneously.

LDP ANALYSIS  —  London Daily Post Sports Desk

Baleba is the right call — Liverpool’s midfield has been exposed all season, and he fills the gap precisely.

Gordon is the dream: a boyhood Red, proven at the highest level, and already familiar with the pressure of a big club.

£100m sounds ambitious after last summer’s £400m spend — but both players are priced at genuine market value.

Key Facts at a Glance

Target 1 (Winger) Yan Diomande, 19 — RB Leipzig. 11G, 8A. Barcelona is also in the race. Fee: €60m+
Target 2 (Midfield) Carlos Baleba, 22 — Brighton. 2 years left. Valued ~£48m. Man Utd missed out last summer
Target 3 (Attack) Anthony Gordon, 25 — Newcastle. Boyhood Red. 17G/5A this season. Valued £52m+
Salah Update Confirmed leaving end of the season. Saudi Arabia is the most likely destination
Klopp Status At Red Bull until 2029. No formal Liverpool approach. Xabi Alonso is reported favourite
Slot Position FSG is publicly backing him. Top-5 finish + UCL run needed to secure his future

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Barcelona sign Yan Diomande ahead of Liverpool?

Unlikely, based on current reporting. Barcelona’s enquiry to RB Leipzig received little encouragement, with Liverpool and Chelsea both willing to pay above €60 million — a figure Barcelona are struggling to match under their financial constraints. Liverpool is considered favourites at this stage.

Is Jurgen Klopp replacing Arne Slot at Liverpool?

No. Klopp is contracted to Red Bull until at least 2029, and no approach has been made by Liverpool. FSG is officially backing Slot. Xabi Alonso is widely reported as the preferred successor if a change is eventually made, not Klopp.

Who are Liverpool’s two Premier League transfer targets?

According to journalist Ekrem Konur, they are Brighton’s Carlos Baleba (midfielder, 22) and Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon (winger, 25). The combined valuation of both players is approximately £100 million, though final fees would likely exceed that figure.

When is Mohamed Salah leaving Liverpool?

Salah has confirmed he will leave at the end of the 2024-25 season. The Saudi Pro League is reported to be the frontrunner to sign him, with an agreement reportedly close to being finalised. Roma have also been linked as a potential European option.
