by Jennifer Valentine-Miller

The fortnight at Wimbledon always brings back memories for Jennifer Valentine-Miller. Upon reflection, Tennis the sport remains exclusive, hard work, opportunities often reserved for those who can afford private clubs, coaching in America, and extensive tournament travel.

Long before Wimbledon became an annual television tradition, Jennifer Valentine-Miller  (nee Valentine) was already forging her own sporting path. After helping her school win the Essex County Netball Cup at the age of 15 in the 1976–77 season, she chose not to rest on her success. Instead of joining school ski excursions, she accepted a new challenge through the Brentwood Deanery, travelling to the Essex County Tennis Club to see whether she could exchange a netball for a tennis racket—and so began a journey that would shape much of her sporting life. This recommendation came from international sports men and women within her family.

Like many young people during  the 20th-century in East London, provided an earthiness on park courts rather than private clubs.

To achieve her goals it was the green areas of West Ham Park, Stratford Park and Plashet Park as that acted as training grounds for her good grounding. These community courts nurtured determination and resilience because it was becoming an isolated pursuit. It was the London borough of Tower Hamlets who produced a sports community where tennis and cricket existed side by side. They demonstrated that community sports could bring together young people like Jennifer from different backgrounds and provide opportunities where few existed elsewhere.

During the late 1970s representing Great Britain at an elite level was an exceptionally rare achievement for Black girls during that era. Looking back, she firmly believes that financial limitations, limited access to professional coaching, and the absence of structured talent pathways meant that gifted young players from working-class communities often went unnoticed.

“Reaching the elite national level was an incredibly rare and challenging achievement for Black girls during my era the real world was far removed from school achievements and golden handshakes. With all that said, we still turned up”, says Jennifer.

There were also very few Black British role models within tennis. While pioneers such as Althea Gibson, Arthur Ashe and later Zina Garrison from America inspired audiences around the world, British television naturally focused on international stars.

Historically, the Lawn Tennis Association has faced criticism for not reaching communities beyond traditional tennis circles as opposed to municipal park courts in East London. Jennifer unfortunately reflects upon the difficult times:

“It was all about sponsorship. I could not afford to continue because of lack of investing financially in the sport. Many of us became semi-professional or remained amateurs because we needed to work for a living. Even our tennis clothing reflected the financial realities we faced; so good to see today’s female athletes wearing their sponsors logos at major tournaments.”

These challenges extended beyond the players themselves. Tennis was changing rapidly during this period. By the 1970s, officials and umpires had begun moving away from the traditional white laboratory-style coats that had symbolised the amateur era. The professional game was becoming more modern, commercial and internationally recognised. Yet many aspiring players from diverse backgrounds still found themselves behind the scenes.

Today, organisations are helping to create greater diversity within tennis, while promoting areas that Jennifer is involved in like mental health, wellbeing, and discrimination at Healing Relations PR. This work is helping to inspire a new generation of players who can see pathways that were not visible for Jennifer and her contemporaries.

The young women from ethnic backgrounds who persevered through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s did so against considerable odds. They trained within park courts, balanced their employment with competitions, and pursued excellence despite limited recognition or support. Their contribution deserves to be remembered as part of Britain’s sporting heritage.

As someone who lived through that era, Jennifer Valentine-Miller remains convinced that those decades produced genuine trailblazers.
