Question: Baby Boie, for those who might be hearing about you for the first time, could you describe your unique blend of electronic rap sound? What sets it apart?
Answer: I would describe my sound as surreal and lively. When I first started making music one of the most important things to me was creating an experience for my audience. However, I really wanted to push for creating an original sound so I always challenged myself to write songs on beats that to me sounded like something I’d never heard before. Another thing I really push for are creating beats that I think can immerse my listeners. If I can give you an adventure in two minutes then I think I’m winning.
Question: Being from Chicago, a city known for its rich musical heritage, how have your surroundings influenced your music? Can you share any particular experience or place in Chicago that has significantly impacted your art?
Answer: Chicago never falls short on providing endless inspiration. I think what I love most about it is that everyone here seems to appreciate great music and creativity in general. I’ve always had the best experiences going to concerts or festivals in the city. It feels like a privilege to be able to contribute to the music scene here.
Question: Collaboration is key in the music industry. Are there any artists, especially from Chicago, whom you would like to collaborate with or have inspired your musical style?
Answer: There are a lot of artists, especially from Chicago that I would collaborate with. When I was still in school I was listening to artists like Kid Cudi, Chip Tha Ripper, Lupe Fiasco, 50 Cent, & Eminem. There are also a lot of bands from the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s that have influenced me like The Police, The Talking Heads, Depeche Mode, and Interpol to name a few.
Question: Can you give us some insights into your creative process? How do you usually start working on a new track and what are the elements you focus on to make it resonate with your audience?
Answer: It really depends. I usually have the beat made before writing all my lyrics for a song. There are times where I’ll have a particular hook or verses already written before a beat is made and based off the lyrics my producer will usually make a beat that is spot on to the vibe, energy, and emotion of what I have written. The finished beat then helps me write everything else. I also have a passion for telling stories.
Question: Looking ahead, what can we expect from Baby Boie? Any exciting projects, collaborations, or new directions in your sound that you can share with us?
Answer: Well I will be dropping singles every month from now until the end of the year, which I’m very excited about. On top of that I will be releasing a 25 track album on October 31st for Halloween. I’m working hard to make sure it’s the best work I’ve put out yet. After that I will then jump right back into album mode for what I plan to be another 7 track album. I will keep the details on that under wraps for now. Moving forward I’m always looking to challenge myself when it comes to music and art in general, so the sky is the limit in terms of what I plan on making in the future. There are so many genres and sounds that I truly want to tap into and study more so I have a lot of work to do. This is just the beginning.
