Chicago has been taking over in recent times, and local rapper Chi City is continuing international reign with his new single “Caroline.”
Born Shantez Jackson of South Side, Chicago, the young creative fought through hardships to become one of Chicago’smost talented artists with the stage name, Chi City as an ode to the streets that raised him. Focused on overcoming adversity to provide a way out for his single mother of 5, Chi City left behind his first passion, Art & Drawing, and even turned down a full football scholarship to follow his calling in music. This transition came after falling in love with the hip hop genre when he heard the legendary Cleveland rap group, Bone Thugs N Harmony. He would find inspiration in other influential geniuses like J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Jaden Smith, Logic, and Kanye West. His music in turn was developed to a level that could compete with those greats, both in content and creativity, and with his knowledge and experience of the streets, his songs told heartfelt tales from his upbringing.
Chi City has since worked with iconic artists like Rihanna, Kodak Black, Jamie Foxx, Usher, Nicole Scherzinger, Diplo, City Girls, G-Easy, and Machine Gun Kelly among others. Under his belt are hits like the 2017 breakout single “Thug Life” and controversial “Sorry Kanye” single over a swiped Kanye Westunreleased “Fade” beat. Inking a partnership deal with Empire Distribution CEO Ghazi Shami in late 2019, Chi City has been crushing its goals. On August 13th, he released yet another heartfelt single titled, “Caroline.” Saying the track is dope is an understatement. The lyrical rhyme schemes and fluid flows over the afro type beat further iterates the versatility of Chi City. “Caroline” takes fans on a walk through the street life, illustrating the everyday choices youths must outgrow and overcome to make it out. It’s like a journey into Chi City’s experiences that connects fans to his world and the world faced by many struggling in his hometown.
